The Day of Firsts

Good old fashion research and relentless internet surfing has led us to our next trend alert and this one’s quite the conversational piece! Not short of, “Oooh’s;” “Wow’s;” and, “Oh my’s;” it has definitely prompted some debate (peppered with the occasional adolescent giggle). As a result of hearing the numerous reactions, we felt compelled to share ‘the morning after’ photo shoot and hear your verdict on the topic.

The ‘morning after’ the wedding night is the latest development in wedding photography. Newlyweds are hiring photographers to capture their first morning as husband and wife. Sounds mild enough right? Well that depends - some like it hot! In fact, the overly risqué and boudoir interpretation of the ‘morning after’ is sky rocketing this subject into discussion forums across the industry.

Researching these brave twosomes proved to be eye-opening. Couples, within hours of the biggest celebration of their lives, invite someone sporting a camera lens into their home to document the intimate moments a husband and wife may share. Many images unapologetically featured dishevelled subjects in various states of undress mimicking that scene from Titanic. Cue the chuckles. The less than evocative approach leaves nothing to the imagination and despite the predominately classic black and white format, the images are far from your classic couples photography.

First impressions aside however, photographing a day of firsts is a refreshing way to celebrate and eternalize your partnership and it can be done without the raunch if this isn’t your style. It presents an opportunity to capture the uncensored emotions of newlyweds whilst in an intimate yet relaxing environment. Inspiration can come from everyday routine; making breakfast, sharing coffee and newspapers or stories and laughter from the previous night’s event. Or perhaps there is a focus in mind for the shoot; brunch with family and friends post wedding, trash the dress or on location watching your first sunrise as a married couple.

Here at White + White we were determined to find you some inspiration and maybe motivate couples to explore what we are now referring to as ‘The Day of Firsts,’ photography.

Reverse Cinematography

Photographs and videos are the most valuable and tangible souvenir of any wedding day and often new creative limits are explored to help commemorate the moment. We have seen many a trend including the disposable camera, the polaroid, the photo booth and of course the wedding day 'highlight' video. However, here at White+White we are excited to have discovered the far more developed art form of wedding cinematography...but in reverse!

Colorado based cinematographers Velare Imaginarium http://velare.tv/ were approached by musician Tim and artist Amy, who wanted something different for their wedding video; more a cinematic celebration of their big day then a recount of it. A piece was developed that didn't rely on gimmicks, overstated video effects or a top 40 hit. It's no secret that inspirational cinematography has certainly developed over the last few years however creative licence has undoubtedly been exercised in this clip.

Now don't get us wrong-we sincerely understand and appreciate the value of photographing your wedding day but there is something absolutely captivating about images and audio interlaced with family and friends that makes this hard to rule out. In fact, we say don't don't worry about 'one or the other', just do both! A timeless and emotive story is told with such understated style that it's hard not to fall in love with the bride and groom and the beauty that is their union.

REAL WEDDINGS - Sarah + Budhi

This week I am showcasing Sarah and Budhi’s magical wedding. This grand affair took place over the Easter long weekend at the Gallery of Modern Art. Marcus Bell from Studio Impressions was the talented photographer behind these gorgeous images. Enjoy!

The dress was from the one and only DARB and featured a French lace-frilled bodice and full tulle skirt.

Sarah's fresh seasonal garden bouquet was made by the lovely Emma at Habitat Flowers. The bridesmaids wore black strapeless ruffled dresses from Kookai.

Budhi and his rock star brothers striking a pose (Budhi comes from a family of 10!).

The ceremony took place under a marquee on Maiwar Green next to the Gallery of Modern Art. Guests sat on white leather bench seats. Two urns filled with white cherry blossoms and magnolia leaves flanked the latte isle. A chandelier hang behind the B&G.

The B&G and bridal party danced down the aisle to “You’re My Best Friend” by Queen.

The pre-reception shoot was held around the grounds surrounding the Gallery of Modern Art. This architecturally acclaimed building is a photographer‘s dream location and has become a hotspot amoungst Brisbane wedding couples.

80 guests dined from one long banquet style table positioned in the centre of GOMA’s roof top terrace. Long mirrors, carnation balls and black tall vases of seasonal white flowers lined the table.

White napkins tied together by a black ribbon and diamontee sat over silver base plates. A white gloss dance floor stood at one end of the room whilst a white gloss dance floor with a silver ball chandelier stood at the other. Chill out lounges were positioned throughout the terrace.

The table was styled by the talented Jodie from W.Edding & Co.

The black and white vintage inspired cake was made by Ideas in Icing.

Guests danced the night away with tunes from Swing Central.
